497 Austin Alert:
A Call to Save Lives

My son, Austin, was taken from us in a tragic head-on collision with a wrong-way driver. No warning, no chance to react—just a devastating loss. I’m driven by a mother’s grief and a mission to prevent this from happening to others. The “497 Austin Alert” is my vision to save lives on our roads.

The Vision

Imagine saying “Austin Alert” when you spot a hazard—road debris, dense fog, wrong-way driver, intoxicated driver, etc.. Your phone or navigation system confirms, “Austin Alert?” You say “yes,” and instantly, all drivers within a 2-mile radius are notified of the danger’s location. They can slow down or pull over. Emergency services are alerted simultaneously, pinpointing the issue for rapid response. Every second counts when lives are at stake.

Why It Matters

Current systems rely on 911 calls, often too late to prevent tragedy. My son didn’t have a chance—a car going the wrong way on the highway ended his life before help could arrive. This system could warn drivers of dangers like sinkholes, debris, or impaired drivers, giving them precious moments to act.

How I Envision It Working

  • Activate: Say “Austin Alert” when you see a road hazard.
  • Confirm: Your device asks, “Confirm Austin Alert?” You respond “yes” or “no.”
  • Notify: If confirmed, satellites pinpoint your location, alerting all vehicles and emergency services within 2 miles.
  • React: Drivers can slow down or pull over; police rush to the scene.

Implementation

This could be a government-backed feature on phones and navigation systems, or a privatized solution built into the existing reporting features of Google Maps, Waze, Apple Maps . Opting out would be simple—toggle it off. But who wouldn’t want a chance to protect their loved ones?

Be the Change

Too many lives are lost to preventable accidents. My 27-year-old son was full of light, stolen in an instant. I’m fighting for a system that acts faster than 911, giving drivers and first responders a fighting chance. Join me to make roads safer.
